What is Xylitol?
Xylitol is an all-natural sweetener found in many fruits and vegetables, including raspberries and plums. It is completely natural and IS also produced by the human body during normal metabolism. It is not a chemical or a drug. Research shows that it is a healthier alternative to sugar and artificial sweeteners. It is equal in sweetness and volume to sugar and the granular form can be used in many of the ways that sugar is used. German chemists discovered this naturally occurring sugar in the late 19th century in birch tree bark, and it is also naturally found in the fiber of fruits and vegetables, including corn. This is the source of our Xylitol candies.

Why is Xylitol good for you?
Xylitol strengthens teeth, reduces new tooth decay, reduces cavity-causing bacteria, inhibits growth of dental plaque, stimulates saliva flow, and does NOT impact insulin levels. It is a great alternative for diabetics to satisfy your sugar craving without harming your teeth. OC candies with Xylitol stimulate saliva production to help with dry mouth.

How does Xylitol help reduce tooth decay ?
Xylitol inhibits the growth of the bacteria that cause cavities. It does this because these bacteria (Streptococcus mutans) cannot utilize xylitol to grow. When these bacteria take up Xylitol instead of sugar, it gets converted to Xylitol Phosphate that bacteria cannot utilize. Over time with Xylitol use, the quality of the bacteria in the mouth changes and fewer and fewer decay-causing bacteria survive on tooth surfaces. This results in less plaque formation and the level of acids attacking the tooth surface is lowered. Xylitol also neutralizes the pH level in saliva and plaque. A neutral pH prevents further enamel destruction. Studies show that Streptococcus mutans is passed from parents to their newborn children, thus beginning the growth of these decay producing bacteria in the child. Regular use of Xylitol by mothers has been demonstrated to significantly reduce this bacterial transmission, resulting in fewer cavities for the child. ( from the California Dental Association)

How much Xylitol candy is safe to eat per day?
Dental experts recommend the regular use of 6-8 grams of Xylitol per day to protect your teeth. You can safely eat 3-5 servings of OC candy ( serving size: 2 pieces/2g, amount per serving: 5 cal ) every day and enjoy the benefits of great taste and oral protection at the same time. Use the Xylitol three to five times daily between meals, after snacks and soft drinks. Frequency is more important than quantity. As Xylitolis digested slowly in the large intestine, it acts much like fiber and large amounts can lead to soft stools or have a mild laxative effect. However, the amounts suggested here for cavity reduction are far lower than those typically producing bowel distress.

Does it matter where your Xylitol comes from?
There are several false myths that the plant source of Xylitol impacts the end product ( corn vs. birch), but scientific research shows there is no difference in the harvested end product with regards to its source. Our Xylitol is safe and of the purest pharmaceutical grade for human consumption. It is certified non-GMO and Kosher.

Is Xylitol FDA approved?
Xylitol has been approved for safety by a number of agencies, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the World Health Organization’s Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives, and the European Union’s Scientific Committee for Food.

Does Xylitol have any calories?
One teaspoon of Xylitol contains 40% less calories than regular sugar and it contains zero net effective carbs.

Is Xylitol safe for pets?
Our candies contain Xylitol, which is dangerous for pets and can be fatal if they consume 50mg (.05g) per pound of body weight. Keep products containing Xylitol out of reach of your pets, especially dogs. If you find evidence your pet has consumed Xylitol, bring them to a vet or emergency pet hospital immediately.
